Think about a time someone believed in you—when they took the time to share what they knew, listen to your questions, and encourage you to aim higher. That kind of support can really make a difference in someone’s life. It boosts confidence, sparks passion, and creates effects that last well beyond that moment of encouragement.

In our industry, mentorship isn’t just about teaching technical skills. It’s about opening doors and inspiring hope. It’s about making sure people feel supported to learn, grow, and work together. Cory Savin sums it up nicely when he says, “I want to see what schools are putting out. Mentoring helps shape the next generation of engineers, just like it’s shaping me.” These relationships are vital—they help students gain real-world experience, build confidence, and start thinking about their future careers in manufacturing and robotics.

Internships work in a similar way. They’re more than a line on a résumé; they’re a way for students to connect what they’ve learned in class to what happens in the real world. Brayden Archambeau shares, “Getting hands-on experience in a real team showed me how everything in robotics comes together—from design to programming. It really prepared me for my career.” Those practical experiences can shift how students see their possibilities and open doors to new opportunities.

“Growth, investment, and community are the essentials of mentorship and internships. When employers take the time to invest in the next generation, they shape not only their industry but also the communities around them. Sharing knowledge and giving real hands-on opportunities create lasting impacts. Mentorship’s influence is powerful and long-lasting.”

But the benefits don’t just stop with individuals. When communities get involved—through local robotics clubs or similar groups—they create a space for curiosity, teamwork, and shared goals. Drew Bassler remembers, “Joining the robotics club gave me a safe place to learn and grow, and mentors guided me through every challenge.” These groups give students the encouragement and support they need to keep moving forward.

Strong mentoring is about more than just helping someone succeed—it’s about building a legacy of resilience and innovation. When companies invest in mentoring programs, they help develop future leaders and energize local economies. They cultivate a skilled workforce that’s ready to solve tomorrow’s problems. Every word of encouragement, each shared lesson, and every opportunity for growth adds up to a better future for everyone.

Creating these programs isn’t accidental. Organizations need to be intentional—creating welcoming environments where mentors and mentees feel valued, providing training for mentors, and celebrating achievements along the way. Giving people meaningful opportunities to learn and develop helps include more passionate folks in our industry and motivates everyone to move forward together.

Of course, there will be challenges. But with patience, clear communication, and a shared sense of purpose, those obstacles can become opportunities for growth. By sharing success stories and supporting each other, we turn setbacks into lessons and strengthen our community.

Through mentorship and community involvement, we’re not just building robots or manufacturing products—we’re shaping a future that is more innovative, resilient, and inclusive. When we invest in people both locally and nationally, everyone benefits.

Inspire locally. Impact globally. Let’s build tomorrow together.
