The Controls Engineering Manager will manager the day-to-day and long-term operations of the Controls Engineering Department. They will manage the work flow and project budget using all the tools available to meet the schedule and make shipments on time. They will maintain the highest quality of work possible and in the safest work environment achievable.
Essential Functions:
- Manage engineering staff to high levels of design and documentation accuracy by creating and maintaining accountability to engineering standards, procedures, and methods.
- Provide mentoring and consultation for design and problem-solving of control systems related to industrial machinery, automation, and material handling.
- Lead the development and implementation of internal engineering standards to simplify control designs resulting in increased efficiency in controls development from project to project.
- Interact directly with customers to present concepts and insights into the proposed design and discuss solutions to meet customer requirements.
- Manage engineering procedures by continually reviewing standards, soliciting feedback from internal customers, and making updates as needed
- Own and maintain all software and licenses related to Controls.
- Anticipate potential project risks in design, timeline, and/or costs and drive solutions in advance to minimize impact.
- Review and approve all schematics before and after designs are released.
- Evaluate and approve all programs before and after internal runoffs.
- Hold regular design review meetings throughout a project’s development and provide technical guidance and recommendations for practical, efficient and cost-effective designs
- Understand Machine Controls concepts and work to improve standards.
- Partner closely with Manufacturing and Field Service in providing prompt support to internal and external customers.
- Hire, train, evaluate, and discharge staff, and resolve personnel grievances.
- Lead and mentor the general performance and the continual development of the Controls Engineers.
- Develop plans to improve the skills of each person in the department and monitor overall effectiveness.
- Promote an injury-free workplace by applying knowledge in electrical/mechanical safety codes and guidelines.
- Support departmental budget planning.
- Support Sales Department which may include travel to customer locations in developing project scope or work documents and by aiding in developing proposals.
- Ensure customer documentation including electrical drawings and operations manuals are complete, accurate, and delivered at the time of equipment commissioning. Document all activities as required.
- Help promote the company culture and values to encourage top performance and high morale.

- Perform any additional responsibility deemed necessary by management.
- Carry out other tasks and assignments as requested by immediate supervisor.
Education, Experience, Skills, and Physical Requirements:
- Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (B.S.E.E) discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have 10+ years of experience of hands on programming and controls experience in a related field. Must have Prior experience in Allen Bradley Logic (Rockwell), AB HMI Logic, RS Logic, Siemens, Robotics, Servo Motion etc. AutoCAD experience is required. Must demonstrate proficiency in the development and management of process control solutions, from collecting data through the design, configuration, and integration processes. Must be competent in programming and the development/implementation of engineering guidelines and standards. Experience with Vision Camera systems (Cognex, Keyence, Dalsa) and experience with Robotic (Fanuc, ABB) systems, preferred.
- Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organizations. Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, technical drawing, and fabrication specifications. Excellent communication and leadership skills with a focus on team collaboration.
- Leadership skills: Ability to lead a project management team through communication, organization motivation, creativity conflict management and a focus on task ownership.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Skilled in problem solving and troubleshooting.
- Licenses and Other Requirements:
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and maintain a good driving record in order to be cover by the company's automobile insurance.
- Must be at ease working with others of essentially equal or even greater technical expertise and experience of an effective manner.
- Good mechanical / technical skills, proficient aptitude with Computer programs.
- Must have high attention to detail and quality.
- Some travel is required.
